Journey: Knowing God is With You Every Step of the Way

Starting a God-inspired journey can seem so daunting. It will take you out of your comfort zone, but God is with you every step of the way.

I keep hearing phrases like: get out of your comfort zone, make a change, become more involved. This can be exciting, scary, and exhausting. It can also be overwhelming.

So how can we cope with this? How do we keep the exciting feeling and not get so overwhelmed we can’t move forward or lose the feeling of purpose? These are questions that I have been asking myself a lot during this season of life, when everything seems to be going at 100MPH.

Starting a God-inspired journey can seem daunting. It will take you out of your comfort zone. But the good news is God is with you every step of the way. First Steps

Then they said to him, ‘Please inquire of God to learn whether our journey will be successful.’ The priest answered them, ‘Go in peace. Your journey has the LORD’s approval.’

Judges 18:5-6, NIV

My husband, Phillip, has taught me a lot about carrying joy and excitement for God. He has really jumped out of his comfort zone recently and done it with such gusto and verve that I have been in awe. Until recently he hasn’t been much of a “joiner” in church-related activities. Phillip would go to church. He would help with something if someone asked. But he didn’t seek out opportunities to be involved. This made it easy for me to not be involved. I could sleep in on Sundays, not volunteer, or just be a passive Christian.

Then a little over a year ago he decided to sign up to be an usher at our church. He loved helping out and knowing that his help was needed. Now, Phillip works all three services every week. He sometimes grumbles about having to get up early on Sunday morning, but once there, he is definitely in his element. I have also tried to be more involved and turn my focus towards being a more active follower of Christ.

They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God.

3 John 1:6, NIV

Preparing the Journey

But that’s not the end or even all of the beginning of Phillip’s story. He joined a men’s group that meets a few Friday mornings a month to discuss a book. Then he was asked to join a leadership training group reading another book. By the way, Phillip often has joked through the years that he has only read one book from cover to cover in his whole life….now he is reading two simultaneously.

Because of this, our home conversations are even more authentic and transparent. We talk about what he is reading, what I am reading, and how we see God’s plan playing out in our lives. It feels more like a complete life than it ever has before.

There is still more to this story. A few months ago, right before Christmas, Phillip was given the opportunity, through his work, to go on a mission trip to Liberia. Since he has taken hold of that opportunity, I have seen such joy and excitement, as well as some nervousness. But boy, have I seen God’s hand at work.

Christ-Centered

God has asked all of us to give with a generous heart. Putting this into practice has brought all of us joy, but it has also caused some stress. We have not taken anything away, just added to our plate. That means that because everything is on a time table, we have had to add extra time towards this project and take it away from other places in our lives.

As he prepares to go, he is fundraising, asking for donations and supplies to take to the orphanages he will be visiting and asking for others to pray for God’s blessing on the trip. He has had a mound of paperwork to contend with and a few rounds of shots to get. I have been his sounding board and helped him get the word out. At times it would have been easier to say…We are just too busy for this right now, maybe in a couple of years, this wil be easier. -OR-This is really expensive, maybe in a couple of years, we could financially be in a better place to support this trip.

All of this can seem tedious, overwhelming and some of it unpleasant. But every time Phillip has felt a little out of control, worried, or overwhelmed, he has centered himself in our Savior. We talk, we pray, we rest. All three have felt Christ-centered.

‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’

Jeremiah 29:11, NIV

Seeing God’s Path and Following It

Through all of this journey, he has felt a pushing from God. That push has made him excited to see what’s next. Phillip prays daily to know God’s will in his life and has been so surprised to see how God has aligned his path to Him. This has pushed both of us more onto a Christ-centered path for our lives. And that has been exhilarating!

God desires to have a relationship with us. He wants us to invite Him to walk with us daily. When we do, this life has a way of opening up. It’s not always easy and rarely what we’ve planned. But it is always exciting!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV

Dear God,

Thank you for pushing us. Your hand is so firmly felt in our relationship. I feel the bonds of my marriage so firmly that I know it is You making us stronger. This opportunity feels beautiful and hard. Help us to move forward in a way that is pleasing to you. Be our guide and light the way to do what is pleasing to You and Your purpose.

love,

Obey: Accepting Loving Discipline in Our New Identity

Desiring to obey the Lord is a natural response to our new identity in Him. We don’t need to fear discipline for it is a natural action of love from our Heavenly Father.

I have a wall hanging in my bathroom that has the famous verse from Joshua on it.

It reads: HOME, home is where your story begins. Then at the bottom, it says, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” I see this verse every single day and it’s not something I take lightly. We learned nine years ago the lesson of truly choosing to obey and serve the Lord.

Lip Service

We had been living a lip service Christian life. We went to church. Said prayers at mealtimes and bedtime, but that was as deep as our relationship with the Lord went. He allowed me to get very sick and I immediately knew He was disciplining me.

And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, ‘My Child, don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.’

Hebrews 12:5-6, NLT

I lost the ability to bathe myself, get myself dressed and to walk more than a few feet at a time. My husband became my caretaker through chemotherapy and steroids. I read through the Word twice in nine months and completely surrendered my life to Christ during this time.

My husband also laid down his own will for God’s through this ordeal. Not all our trials are a chastisement, but we needed this season to truly make God the Lord of our lives. Praise Him for His care, His discipline, His working in our lives. We aren’t the same people we were before.

But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.

Joshua 24:15, NLT

Set Apart

Have you noticed that something you weren’t aware of before is drawn to your attention, and once you’re aware of it you see it everywhere? In psychology, this has a real name- the frequency illusion. Let me tell you, when you have decided to follow and actually obey Christ, you realize very quickly how many profess His name but deny Him with their lifestyles.

When Christ dwells in us and we surrender to Him totally, His Holy Spirit is there to teach, guide and correct us. His Word is alive and active and judges the thoughts and attitudes of our heart. When we compromise who we are in Christ to look like the world, we are disobeying His command.

And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore, come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.

2 Corinthians 6:16-17, NLT

World Appearance

We each have our own journey and our own relationship with Christ that we will one day answer for. My encouragement for you today is to really evaluate any part of your heart and life that you’ve allowed to be influenced by the world. Or parts you may not have ever surrendered to Him. Do you still dress like the world, have filthy speech like the world, watch TV shows that encourage you to lust like the world, listen to music that glorifies sin like the world?

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

1 John 2:15-17, NLT

We each have our own relationship with Christ that we will one day answer for. We must evaluate any part of our hearts and lives that we've allowed the world to influence. Evaluate and surrender them to the Lord. Click To Tweet

Desire to Obey

I have made many changes to my life in order to obey and bring glory to God. I don’t dress how I used to dress, make the same jokes I used to make, or watch TV shows that highlight my struggle against lust. Don’t get me wrong, I still have many struggles against sin in my life, and the Lord brings them to my attention often. I wrestle with a couple in particular that I have a hard time talking about. My mind truly is a battlefield and the war is ever raging…

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

1 Peter 1:14, NLT

God isn’t asking us for perfection. He knows we are helpless and our hearts are desperately wicked. All he wants and expects is the laying down of these desires that wage war against our souls.

Desire to obey Him, plead for His grace and mercy and He will give us the strength to make these changes in our lives that shape us into His image. Then He will receive all the glory and honor for how we’ve changed, and others will see His love and character slowly emerge in our everyday lives as we obey our Father in heaven.

Desiring to obey the Lord is a natural response to our new identity in Him. We don't need to fear discipline in love from our Heavenly Father. Knowledge: Trusting the Omniscience of God to Preserve Your Life

Knowledge can be powerful, but to what end? Understanding may bring advancement, yet at times those tidbits of information leave us wishing we could un-know it

Recently I read a case study about a woman who struggled with paralyzing fear. Both she and her fiancee were followers of Christ, but her betrothed had been sexually immoral before he became a Christian. She was concerned about STDs so they both underwent testing. He came back clean, but she learned she would have difficulty conceiving children. That knowledge sent her spiraling into a deep depression. She went from one fear to another based on the information she received.

Ignorance is Bliss

On my way to the auto shop the same day I read the case study, I was keenly aware of the thin tread and unwelcome screw lodged in my back driver-side tire. Wincing each time I hit a bump, I tried to navigate the winter roadways with the expertise of a racecar driver.

Then it donned on me: A week ago I had no idea my vehicle was less than safe to drive so I drove around town without worry. God was just as faithful to get me from A to B, but like the woman I read about, I did not experience any anxiety until I had knowledge of the incapacity. There are definite perks to not knowing some things. Once known, what can we do with it?

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. For your name’s sake, O LORD, preserve my life; in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.

Psalm 143:10-11, NIV

Knowledge is Power?

In the beginning, Adam and Eve knew only goodness and purity. There was not one iota of doubt, fear, or anxiety. They trusted God completely, loved one another fully, and enjoyed creation without hindrance. Their only need was God’s presence. Then an opportunity arose.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?”

Genesis 3:1, ESV

Eve responded by quoting what God told her and Adam, saying God had commanded them not to eat the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden — not even touch it — or they would die. Then the serpent offered a different viewpoint. He fed her more information than she had to begin with.

But the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’

Genesis 3:4-5, ESV

FOMO

Eve likely thought what all of us have undoubtedly considered at one time or another: What if God is holding out on me? Are you familiar with this acronym — FOMO? It means fear of missing out. Eve had a choice in that moment… Trust her Maker or pursue selfish curiosity. God had given her and Adam one no in an entire world of yeses. “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”

So of course, being the children that they were, that’s exactly what they did…Instead of embracing God’s good gifts, the man and woman doubted God’s generosity toward them. Doubted that an entire world of goodness was enough. Instead, they turned their eyes to the one thing that had been withheld…As much as the man and woman clearly defied God’s boundary, they also rejected everything He had already provided for them. They saw all that He offered them and decided that it was not good enough. And in doing so they turned from His goodness to seek goodness elsewhere. But all they discovered was evil.

Hannah Anderson, All That’s Good

It’s Simple

I want to be clear: knowledge is not evil. Pursuing education, practicing memorization, reading, and studying can be positive avenues to gain wisdom. But let the pursuit of knowledge have the purpose of conforming us more and more into Christ-likeness. And as a friend shared with me, it’s okay to be simple…

God will give us the understanding we need when we need it.

The unfolding of your words give light; it imparts understanding to the simple.

Psalm 119:130, ESV

Some knowledge strikes fear in our hearts.

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

1 John 4:18, ESV

This verse is not meant to shame, but to encourage us. Pray to be perfected in love!

Some knowledge plants pride in our hearts.

This is what the LORD says: ‘The wise person should not boast in his wisdom; the strong should not boast in his strength; the wealthy should not boast in his wealth. But the one who boasts should boast in this: that he understands and knows me — that I am the LORD, showing faithful love, justice, and righteousness on the earth, for I delight in these things.’ This is the LORD’s declaration.

Jeremiah 9:23-24, CSB

Revealed

We can never exhaust our knowledge of God. He faithfully reveals His character through His Word, His people, and through His creation. He knows all things, and as a result of His overflowing delight, He has given us the gift of His Spirit to preserve and grow us into His likeness.

Now God has revealed these things to us by the Spirit, since the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God[…] Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who comes from God, so that we may understand what has been freely given to us by God.

1 Corinthians 2:10, 12, CSB

Sisters, may we trust what has been freely given and revealed to us, and only ever seek the knowledge that draws us closer to Christ.

We can never exhaust our knowledge of God. He faithfully reveals His character through His Word, His people, and through His creation. Click To Tweet

Reflection: Transforming Our Mirror Image to Reflect Christ

Our physical reflection can sometimes be hard to accept. Our true mirror image transforms through the power of salvation in Christ.

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, as I am fully known.

1 Corinthians 13:12, CSB

I have the occasional day where I look in the mirror with confidence ready to take on the world…or better put…the day ahead of me! BUT, more often than not, I tend to notice all the new things I swear weren’t there a few days ago!

For instance, a new wrinkle on my face, more gray hair on my head, and that lovely stretched skin that proves I’ve carried three children. Most of the time, my reflection leaves me feeling insecure and anxious, instead of recognizing I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Before I accepted Jesus into my life, seeing my reflection in the mirror was like entering a bathroom while someone is taking a hot shower. The mirror was too foggy for me to see anything…

Our physical reflection can sometimes be hard to accept. Our true mirror image transforms through the power of salvation in Christ. Women of Faith | Spiritual Growth | Scripture Study | Christian Mentoring | Daily Devotional #devotional #scripture #salvation #identity #reflection #transformation

In the Fog

If we were truly honest with ourselves, we would all have to admit there are times the mirror is hurtful and just plain mean. We usually see with our flesh before we see with our souls. Our first thoughts rarely consider the image of Christ. This makes the reflection staring back, hard to look at.

Approaching salvation can be difficult for most of us simply because we come face to face with our brokenness. What once seemed hidden in darkness, is now brought into the light. We all have different struggles with the mirror. Especially when we only see our physical reflection and not our salvation’s. Shame, sin, insecurities, discontentment, unsatisfied, fear. Even lust, pride, selfishness, and vanity… sin we freely chose while standing in the fog.

Honesty

Can I be honest with you, Sister? I struggle constantly with my own reflection. On one end, I struggle with my insecurities…

I’m ugly without make-up and without my hair done. I am not attractive at all. I wouldn’t be caught dead going out looking the way I do right now. If people saw the real me, they wouldn’t recognize me.

Then on the other end of the spectrum, I struggle with my pride which sounds like…

I’m looking good right now! This outfit will definitely turn some heads! My husband will be proud to take me out looking like this tonight.

I cringe typing these things, but it’s important to confess our sins. I am an insecure, prideful woman when I’m living in my flesh. Not a great combination. I have had to really wrestle with my identity. When I go through foggy days, my identity will present itself in the mirror as one of those; insecure or prideful.

The Fan Turns On

When I asked Jesus into my life, the fan in the bathroom suddenly turned on. The fog lifted from the mirror. I was finally able to see my reflection the way God intended me to see it…

A Beloved Daughter of a King, worth more than diamonds and rubies, precious and valuable. A Princess pursued daily by her Prince of Peace. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I am loved so much that my Hero and Savior died for me. I am Priceless. And you know what? This is the same for you!

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

Psalm 139:14, ESV

As I learned more about the Lord, my reflection started changing. I was transforming through the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling within my soul.

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:18, ESV

The Mirror is Lifted

I learned to accept that my reflection wouldn’t be perfect while I live on Earth. That’s the whole purpose of the mirror! To remind us that, just like Jesus turned the fan on to lift the fog, He will one day lift the mirror for us as well…

One day, we will stand face to face with our perfect reflection, Jesus Christ. On that day we will understand that we are fully known children of the All-Powerful and Mighty God. Our faces will radiate with joy for pursuing the One our hearts desired most.

Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed.

Psalm 34:5, CSB

We will stand face to face with our perfect reflection, Jesus Christ. On that day we will understand that we are fully known children of a Mighty God. Our faces will radiate with joy for pursuing the One our hearts desire most. Click To Tweet

Light’s Reflection

If you find yourself wrestling with the reflection in the mirror, then please know you’re not alone. We all wrestle with it. But, be encouraged, Sisters! Christ sees us only as the transformed creation we are. To Christ, there is no difference between our earthly self and the person He will see standing before Him. This time on Earth is meant to polish, sharpen and reflect His light, so it shines brightly for those around us to see. When people look at us, they should see the light of Jesus.

Christ knows our flesh and sin just as much as He knows our salvation and newness. But guess what is awesome? He willingly died for us knowing our flesh! He saw us at our WORST and loved us even still! He died for us, not because we were beautiful, but because we were broken. Our brokenness is only made beautiful through His death on the cross. When we see our flesh staring back at us in the mirror, Jesus stands by smiling, Good Morning Beautiful.

Today, Dear Reader, let’s go together and confront our mirror image with confidence! For we KNOW our reflection will TRANSFORM from broken to beautiful because of Christ.

Reflect In Prayer

Oh Lord Help Me to reflect your light in this dark world. Transform my reflection in the mirror to look more like you and less like me. Thank you for your never-changing, perfect image, God. Forgive me when I make this life about my kingdom instead of Yours. When the mirror starts to get foggy Lord, remind me to turn on the fan. I pray this today in my Savior, Jesus’ name. Amen.

Reflect: Living A Life That Expresses Confidence in Our Savior

Current Christian culture can tempt us into checking spiritual boxes to feel ‘good’. Our lives are to reflect confidence in a perfect, loving Savior.

Have you ever met a new acquaintance at a function, and she didn’t take a breath, talking about herself the entire time you were together? For maybe 30 minutes? Do you remember thinking, “Dear God, please help that poor woman find a friend. I am not it! Help me to never be that self-consumed!!!”

Well, sister…in many ways, we all are.

Current Christian culture can tempt us into checking spiritual boxes to feel 'good'. Our lives are to reflect confidence in a perfect, loving Savior. Women of Faith | Spiritual Growth | Scripture Study | Christian Mentoring | Daily Devotional #devotional #scripture #encouragement #Godslove #confidence #beloved

Cheap Christianity

Our life always expresses the result of our dominant thoughts.

Soren Kierkegaard, a Dutch philosopher and theologian, wrote these words between 1843 and 1855, a period when his pen seldom rested. During these years he railed against Christendom, or rather a cultured and respectable Christianity in which one could mentally check off the boxes of prominent religious mores. Thereby satisfying the need to feel spiritually good about oneself. Kierkegaard expounded:

The tragedy of easy Christianity is that existence has ceased to be an adventure and a constant risk in the presence of God but has become a form of morality and a doctrinal system. Its purpose is to simplify the matter of becoming a Christian. This is just paganism, ‘cheap’ Christianity, with neither cost nor pain…It is like war games, in which armies move and there is a great deal of noise, but there is no real risk or pain—

Interestingly, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote something similar in 1937 in The Cost of Discipleship, but he called it cheap grace.

Culture-Current

I wonder how different we are today. While socially we have made a major shift away from “cultured and respectable” Christianity. Now the siren call is to be culture-current. Almost every evangelical church has a band and screens with the music, words and Bible verses displayed. The pastor wears jeans…and please, don’t forget the aromatic coffee served in the lobby! (I love coffee!)

Some teach pleasant Bible thoughts to live by; some preach expository sermons through entire books of the Bible. I have visited both types of churches. Regardless, the majority offer a great children’s ministry or they don’t survive long; youth ministry is a plus, too…

Self-Conviction

I digress.

Are you asking where I am going with this? I’m just following my heart, my own conviction, really. Bear with me…

What do we think about when we think about our spiritual lives? Or our Christian selves?…or do we think about it at all?

What is my life expressing?

Too often, I think, my own life becomes entangled with what my church culture has told me a Christian is supposed to reflect or reveal as much as Jesus taught. Or perhaps it’s just what I have come to believe myself – or a combination of both or all three!

For instance, I’ve been a Christian for most of my life and I believe I can say that I’m a good, moral person, but to whom am I comparing good? Jesus said no one was good except God, (Luke 18:19). Comparing myself to others and finding myself good is not wise, according to Paul, (2 Corinthians 10:12). Yet, how many of us, whether consciously or unconsciously, fall into this trap on a regular basis? I know I do.

Good and Moral?

And what if I am moral? Seriously. Apart from a relationship with Christ, morality, while good for our culture, is conforming to rules of right conduct. Throughout history, there have been many good, moral men who have not been Christian, (think Socrates, Jewish historian Josephus, or someone you know personally).

Is Jesus calling His disciples to be good and moral? A loud chorus quickly agrees that, of course, this isn’t enough! Christians are to be loving, kind, giving – even sacrificial, humble, patient, or…as my granddaughters would say – all the things!

The trouble is, we can’t…we won’t…we aren’t capable; not really, not every moment. Despite our best and most valiant efforts to reflect Christ, we end up expressing whatever dominates our thoughts. For most people, it’s me, myself, and I, (or my kids, my husband, my ministry, my church, my pastor, my weight, my job, my successes, my busy-ness, etc).

While we each desire to reflect the image of God and the Fruit of the Spirit, (Galatians 5:22-23), sadly, too often we instead express – well – US.

Human Praise

Tony Merida, pastor of Imago Dei Church in Raleigh, NC, and speaker for Acts 29 Network stated recently: “When we soak up human praise, we rob others of an encounter with God. We choose to promote our own identity because we don’t want to follow God’s mission for us… Misconstrued identity is the atomic bomb of this generation.”

But why is it the atomic bomb of this generation? Was it not also in Genesis 3 for Adam and Eve or chapter 11 when the people wanted to build a tower to God? Neither narcissism nor distrust in our Father is new.

No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren! […] And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:8, 11, NKJV

Reflect as Beloved

I believe much of our constant self-focus has to do with insecurity in our identity as beloved children of the Father. Our ears remain open to the whispers of doubt and lies of the enemy and closed to the truths of our loving Father.

When you lose touch with your chosenness, you expose yourself to the temptation of self-rejection, and that temptation undermines the possibility of ever growing as the Beloved.

-Henri Nouwen, Life of the Beloved

An intimate knowledge of being chosen and loved brings an unshakable confidence, one which does not need to be fed with narcissism or man’s praise. As the Psalmist declared in Psalm 9:10, when we are intimately acquainted with His name, we will trust Him because we will fully understand that He will not forsake us.

Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior, I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your place. Since you were precious in My sight, you have been honored, and I have loved you…

Isaiah 43:1-4, NKJV

This doesn’t sound like Someone Who is going to abandon me. It sounds like Someone Who will love me until the end of time – and beyond – like Someone who always has my back. It sounds like Someone I want my life to express…and reflect.

I, even I, am the LORD, and besides Me there is no savior.

Isaiah 43:11, NKJV

An intimate knowledge of being chosen and loved brings an unshakable confidence. One which does not need to be fed with narcissism. When we are intimately acquainted with His name, we will fully understand God will not forsake us. Click To Tweet

Shepherding: Sharing Christ’s Love with The Least of These

When we share the love of Christ with young people who are hurting, we can change the course of their lives. Shepherding in love is one way to do this.

I can almost feel the shock of cold in my fingertips as I recall those early winter morning walks to catch the school bus. Now before you listen for the crotchety echo of your grandpa’s voice saying: “Kid, I had to walk a mile to school every day, barefoot. And it was uphill both ways!” Here’s my disclaimer: my walk was only half a mile; I wasn’t barefoot, and except for the uneven cracks in the sidewalk, it was completely flat!

A Long, Cold Walk…

I was ten years old when I walked that half mile alone, from our apartment to the bus stop, down at the high school parking lot. Those Midwest winter mornings were always very dark, very quiet, and very cold. In front of our old place out in the country, the school bus used to pull right up. I’d run outside and hop right onto the bus–its fumes of diesel fuel and musty vinyl seat upholstery mingling in the warm air.

Since I’d recently moved into town with my dad and sisters, I now had this long, cold walk to contend with. But that walk was really the least of my concerns. You see, within a matter of months, my whole world had come crashing down.

An Escape Plan…

My dad was divorcing my mom, and he was filing for full custody of me and my two older sisters. Divorce is not easy on any family, and the circumstances of this separation proved particularly traumatic. Because my mom had been getting more and more abusive, we essentially had to formulate an escape plan to leave our home.

I remember the morning we left. The tension heightened as Mom began to catch wind of what was happening. As I sat in the big cab of Dad’s old Ford truck, I watched through the windshield as Mom and Dad shouted at each other outside. I covered my ears and clung to my sisters as Mom screamed and shrieked hysterically, pounding on the truck’s metal hood. I remember watching in terror when she threw herself down on the gravel in front of the truck as Dad tried to drive away.

Betrayal…

A few weeks before that, I had to sit in a fancy law office and recount the different ways that Mom had physically, verbally, and emotionally hurt me and my siblings. There was the time she slapped my sister across the face. Another time when she broke a green tree limb over my brother’s back.

Then there were the countless times she whipped the back of my legs so hard with a switch. The swollen red welts were still visible days later. I experienced a strange combination of feelings after that interview. On the one hand, I felt justified; yet on the other, I worried that by confessing about the abuse, I had betrayed my own mom.

Our ‘New’ Apartment…

Now, here we were. In our new apartment, which was really just a rundown, government subsidized box. We didn’t have any furniture except for an old plaid couch from the Salvation Army and a couple of bare mattresses on the floor of our bedroom.

Each night I’d set a small plastic travel alarm clock. I’d won it for selling boxes of chocolates for a school fundraiser. I remember wishing for some of the yummy chocolates instead of the dinky plastic prizes they were giving away.

But the clock did come in handy as I had to get myself up for school. Dad was working two retail jobs and going back to school full time. Most days, he was gone before I got up and didn’t get home until it was time for bed. So, I’d set my alarm and brace myself for the freezing trek to the bus.

“I Don’t Have A Coat”…

But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

1 John 3:17-18, NKJV

Before I ever even knew the Lord, He put people in my life who showed me the love of Christ this passage describes. They mentored me–shepherding me through some very difficult seasons. One morning I showed up to school wrapped in Dad’s very large, but very thin windbreaker jacket. It was the only thing I could find to cover myself up against the cold. When my teacher, Mrs. Montgomery, (I called her Mrs. M.) saw how I was dressed, she asked me if I had lost my coat. I told her, “I don’t have a coat.”

Something about my statement must have touched her because that afternoon, she sent a note home to my dad. In it, she offered to pick me up for school each morning. Dad, who was never one to accept handouts, actually consented to her offer. I was so relieved to know that I wouldn’t have to walk to the bus stop alone anymore! Mrs. M. also found me a proper winter coat.

Hunger…

Each morning, Mrs. M. arrived in her big, warm Astro van. I’d get in, and she’d swing by the local donut shop to get me a donut and hot chocolate on the way to school. That breakfast treat, along with the free school lunch, would be the only food I’d eat all day.

Many nights I writhed around on my mattress, hunger pangs gnawing at my stomach. Eventually, I learned how to feed myself though. When I got so hungry that I just couldn’t take it anymore, I’d walk to the nearby Kroger grocery store and shoplift food to eat. My feelings of fear and guilt for stealing were quickly replaced by the relief of a full belly.

Utterly Alone…

Two years after we escaped from Mom’s, my dad suffered a massive heart attack and died suddenly. I was twelve years old. I had never felt so utterly alone. My dad was dead, and legally I could not–nor did I want to–go back to live with my mom. Once again, Mrs. M. stepped into my broken life and showed me the love of Christ. She came to our apartment and helped clean, fielded phone calls from friends and family, and made sure my sisters and I had food to eat.

Those are just the things I could see her doing, but most likely she also was working behind the scenes. Making Dad’s funeral arrangements and helping line up homes for me and my sisters. No one could take all three of us girls in together. So we had to be split up–all going to live in different families’ homes. Although we often fought like cats, I was terrified to live apart from my big sisters.

I will never forget the morning we left that empty apartment. The emptiness of the space mirrored the gaping hole I felt in my stomach. But this was not the familiar emptiness of hunger. This was an even deeper, physically painful ache. It was the ache of feeling utterly alone in the world. And that ache was accompanied by another, almost sickening feeling: shame. I felt so ashamed as I looked at the single black trash bag on the floor. It contained everything I owned.

Above and Beyond…

That summer, Mrs. M.’s daughter was attending a week-long gymnastics camp in Pennsylvania. Mrs. M. knew that our dad’s family lived in Philadelphia, so she offered to take my sisters and me with her on a road trip. After dropping off her daughter, we went to visit all of our distant relatives on the east coast–many of whom we had never met. Talk about going above and beyond!

In the years that followed, I bounced around from one family to another–six homes in all. When I was scared and had nowhere to turn, I would often call Mrs. M. for help. She would patiently talk through things with me and try to help me make good decisions. Looking back, without her consistently loving and supportive presence, I do not know how I would have made it through those tumultuous years. I thank God for placing her in my life as a teacher, mentor, and friend.

Mentors practice sacrificial love and generosity through the grace and mercy of God, asking nothing in return. The Lord works through them, shepherding our hearts through trauma, pain, and isolation. Click To Tweet

She Pointed Me to Him…

And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.

Matthew 25:40, NKJV

The kind of sacrificial love and generosity that Mrs. M. so willingly offered to me is nothing short of the grace and mercy of God. I was a young girl who had many needs and nothing to offer in return. I was the least of these. Yet, the Lord worked through her, shepherding my heart through traumas that no little girl should ever have to face.

She helped me tremendously, but she was working as unto the Lord. I thank God for her because her love ultimately pointed me to Him. In my mid-twenties, I finally stopped running away from God. And when I turned back to Him, I realized that He had been there all along.

Even when I thought I was utterly alone, He was there. He was the nurturer that I needed my broken mom to be. The Abba that I thought I’d lost when my dad died. He was holding my hands with the frozen fingertips on those long, cold walks to the bus stop. Rubbing my empty belly as I tossed and turned from the hunger pangs.

His voice was in the encouragement I heard from mentors like Mrs. M., the families who took me into their homes, and countless other teachers and counselors who spoke into my life.

Beloved, He has been with us all along. He is with us now and He will be with us forever. Because that is who He is. Emmanuel. God with us.

Has the Lord touched your heart in shepherding one of His lost lambs? May God bless you for helping the least of these!

Isolation: A Letter of Intercession to the Broken and Alone

Pain can tempt us into isolation. Being alone is not the answer to healing and protection. God calls us to stand in the gap for the broken.

There have been a few seasons in my life that have pulled me toward darkness. Darkness is an isolating place to hide. It can shield us from the truth. There were times I was pulled and other times I stumbled into the shadows. I lost my way to the light on the hill. I lost my way to the little lights shining in my loved ones’ hearts. But they always left the light on for me; God left the light on for me…

Pain can tempt us into isolation. Being alone is not the answer to healing and protection. God calls us to stand in the gap for the broken. Women of Faith | Spiritual Growth | Scripture Study | Christian Mentoring | Daily Devotional #devotional #scripture #isolation #alone #pain #darkness #support

Pain on Canvas

Art school was my first glimpse of how fast the world can drag someone to such darkness. This was the height of my battle with self-harm. And it’s no coincidence, this was the height (or the depths) of my lack of confidence. See, this culture taught that great art comes from great pain. So pain I bred, and pain I endured. I concocted it, fed it, let it flow through my veins, and poured it all over canvas.

I’ve never been surrounded by so many people yet felt so very alone. That’s dangerous on an already heavy mind. There’s a despicable desire to retreat even further… Become thin enough to waste away. Make the dorm room dark enough to feel gone. Take late night walks in an unsafe place, trying to fade out of existence. Don’t answer the door or the phone… disappear.

Complete isolation. It’s dangerous.

Familiar Friend

Recently, I’ve been feeling the pull towards darkness, towards isolation. I’m not sure if it’s a bout of seasonal depression or a year-long strain on my mind. Whatever it is, I’ve had to fight so hard to stay away from my familiar friend. I’ve had to fight thoughts of wanting to run and fade away.

There’s a feeling that I know what to expect there, in the dark. I know who can hurt me, or more importantly who can’t hurt me there. I know I can shelter my heart from pain and keep my mind from having to work through normal human living…

Lies and Truth

But it’s all lies… what I know are lies. In the dark, Satan circles like a vulture. In the dark, he whispers, destroys, devours. He knows there’s weakness in seclusion. Absolute singleness… unsheltered, unsafe, exposed.

The truth is… it doesn’t matter who you are, there is at least one, The One, who cares whether you are safe. Who cares to leave the light on for you.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

Romans 8:38, NLT

It’s okay to fall into the darkness, but Love please don’t stay there long. Allow those little lights to pull you to safety; allow the brightest light to pull you to safety. Safety forged by His blood. Safety promised through grace.

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:12, NLT

We must stand against isolation. We must let those who have walked the dark path before usher in our Champion. Let us, shoulder to shoulder, faces to the ground, intercede for our brothers' and sisters' souls. Click To Tweet

To You:

If you’ve lost your way… if you’ve stumbled your way into the dark…

Oh, Sweet Friend please allow me to nurture your heart for a moment…

Please be brave. Do not be alone. Do not sit in isolation. In isolation is a vulnerability that kills. Sometimes physically, but more dangerously, the soul, the heart, the mind deteriorate. The terrors Satan throws are murderers.

Beautiful Sister, you must stand against this… but not alone. We must stand together. Will you let us stand with you? Let us fight with you! Will you let those who have walked this path before, those who know it’s darkness, usher in your Champion? Let us, shoulder to shoulder, faces to the ground, intercede for you… for your soul. Because Love, wars are waging against your soul, not your body, YOUR SOUL.

Satan doesn’t care about your body, though it’s a nice perk when he gets it. He cares that you don’t belong to the only ONE who died to save you. He wants to steal that from you, one whisper at a time. Speak out, Beauty. Tell your sisters, your pastors, your prayer warriors… tell them and let them fight. Don’t allow the isolation of shame, heaviness, condemnation make you silent; make you alone.

Oh please don’t be alone. Let us remind you of the God who selflessly left His throne to destroy your condemnation. Remind you of the Father who pursues, pursues, and pursues again! He never stops. He breathed you into existence, you are not forgotten, you are not condemned.

And, oh Sweet Sister, you are so precious. Valuable. He will restore you; He has restored you. The holes, the mutilations, the breaks in your heart… He will return those, mended. Whole. You are not broken any longer. You are rescued. Redeemed.

Isolation Intercessors

You see, I had intercessors. I had twinkling lights on their knees every night for me (still do). People who didn’t know exactly what I was battling, but knew I wasn’t strong enough to fight for myself. And they fought, oh they fought.

Oh yeah, that’s great for you, Katie. Aren’t you so blessed?

My Sweet, so are you. Do you know how many ladies we have praying for you? Yes, you! The Oh Lord Help Us Team is full of survivors of darkness. We know the importance of praying in the gap for those who don’t have the strength. Reach out to us. Let us know how we can intercede for you! Step out of the darkness.

Helping: Sharing God’s Love Through Actions and Generosity

God calls all of us to provide helping hands whether it be in our schools, churches, or neighborhoods. We must all take part in providing for the needs of those around us.

A couple of weeks ago, two members of my church family, my community, helped me in a time of need. I previously wrote all about how 3 trees made their way on top of my house during a snow storm.

One person in my community of people graciously got them off my roof. And this week, 2 more dear friends helped me get them chopped up and cleared away. They were living, breathing examples of helping our siblings in Christ when they need it.God calls us to provide helping hands in our spheres of influence. Acting in Freedom

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

Galatians 5:13, NLT

We have freedom from sin through Christ’s death and resurrection. We are called to use that freedom to serve one another. That doesn’t mean when it is convenient or easy, it means helping where there is a need.

We must be self-sacrificing like our Savior. He surrendered Himself for us. We cannot satisfy ourselves and be susceptible to our sinful nature, but use our time, freedom, and resources to love each other.

Share What You Have

Don’t forget to do good and to share what you have because God is pleased with these kinds of sacrifices.

Hebrews 13:16, CEB

This verse does not say to share when you are in a time of abundance. It did not say to only share certain things. It clearly states to share what you have. Whatever that may be.

Some people only have time and energy. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you have, we have been implored to share. The act of helping is what is important. And why? Because it pleases God.

We are not just to share during times of abundance or only certain things. God's word tells us to share what we have. It doesn't matter how much or how little, the act of helping is what is important because it pleases God. Click To Tweet

Faith Without Action

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

James 2:14-17, NIV

When we claim to have faith, our faith must be backed by our actions. If we ignore the needs of those around us and refuse to offer help, we are not acting in acceptance of our Savior. Scripture says that when our actions don’t support our faith, then our faith is dead (James 2).

It is not enough to wish someone well, tell them that you are thinking of them, or even that you are praying for them. We do need to pray for each other, of course. But if we have the means to help someone and turn our back, only providing words of comfort, our actions are not reflecting what we believe.

Jesus did not simply wish us well when He came to Earth. He saw our need and He acted taking our place on the cross and dying for us. He acted in obedience to the Father. We have to follow His example.

Abide in Love

But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?

1 John 3:17, ESV

If we want to abide in God’s love, we need to help each other in times of need. This proves God’s love and sets an example for those who witness our actions. Let’s take time out of our schedules to bring a meal, help with yard work, donate unwanted items… Let’s abide in love.

How can you lend a helping hand today?

Gift: Remembering the Intricate Work of God’s Hands

Our human hands can create such beautiful things. But nothing compares to the intricate work of God’s hands or His beautiful gift of salvation.

I have made the earth and created humans on it. It was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded everything in them.

Isaiah 45:12, CSB

I am amazed by what our human hands can invent, create, build, design, craft, and even restore. Our hands have the ability to do so many wonderful things. It blows my mind how a surgeon’s hands can heal the inside of someone’s body.

I’m speechless when I see a piece of architecture beautifully designed and brought into existence by human hands. It’s truly an incredible gift to have the unique capability to use our hands to create things that bring us joy, comfort, and help.

Our human hands can create such beautiful things. But nothing compares to the intricate work of God's hands or His beautiful gift of salvation. Women of Faith | Spiritual Growth | Scripture Study | Christian Mentoring | Daily Devotional #devotional #scripture #create #creation #gift #salvation

God’s Hands Create

With all these amazing things our human hands can muster up, some things remain untouched by our hands. The planets and stars in the universe, the oceans, the mountains, and the spirit inside of us are just a few examples.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1, CSB

This allows us to know that we, and the beautiful world around us, were handcrafted by our Creator. God’s hands have done a perfect work and He alone has accomplished it all.

We are creatures made to create just like our Creator. Whether we use our hands to produce art, write, farm, build, craft, sculpt, dig, fix, measure, or sew. No matter what we choose to do with our hands, we still are unable to create EVERYTHING! Why do you think God designed it this way? I personally think He did this to show that He is in complete control.

Making Idols

When we marvel at the works of our own hands, we can easily idolize and forget where our ability to create came from.

Their land is full of idols, they worship the work of their hands, what their fingers have made.

Isaiah 2:8, CSB (emphasis added)

God sees all, knows all, and creates all. He knows when we forget where our abilities came from. And He calls us out when we do. As God’s people, we are called to understand His divine mystery behind creation. Simply by acknowledging at our highest intelligence, we still cannot create the heavens, the earth, or even the stars in the sky.

Safe Hands

The hands God gave us, create many good and useful things. They also create many evil and sinful things. Satan will use his deceiving, sneaky hands to tempt us with sin. He corrupts our minds and hearts faster than we can blink. This deception begins chasing after us the moment we’re born. We, as God’s children, are not immune to Satan’s conniving schemes. We are very much prone to wander as the hymn suggests.

As Children of God, we must be aware of this and do whatever seems necessary to keep ourselves from falling into Satan’s trap. Satan’s hands, like our own, were created by God. I know, kinda mind-boggling isn’t it?

Many people, including myself, at one point or another, have wondered why God allowed the devil to even come into existence. This is such a good question that requires much knowledge and wisdom to comprehend. We can’t expect to understand the answer to this without seeking to know who God is first.

To know God is to know His son, Jesus Christ. If you want to get to know anyone better, then you need to establish a relationship with them, right? Otherwise, how will you learn who they truly are? We are incapable of understanding these profound mysteries we crave to know, without establishing a relationship with Jesus. Holding hands with Jesus is the only way we can stay safe against the devil and his demons.

I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.

John 10:28, CSB

Hands that Heal

There is a story I love in the Bible that is found in John 9. Jesus bends down to use his hands to spit and stir up the dirt to create a substance that would heal the sight of a blind man. Just like the blind man in the story, we have been blind in our lives.

We need a Savior’s hands to wipe us clean so we can see HIS way instead of our own. Jesus didn’t use clean water to heal the blind man; He used mud in the ground that was made from His spit! I believe He did this to show His followers that He, and only He, has the ability to use our filthy sin and make something good come from it.

The Gift

I was once dead in my trespasses and now I am alive in Christ. My guilt and shame are the very things Jesus used to humble and restore me. When I was confronted with my sin, I immediately became aware of my need for Jesus.

Jesus was sent to us from God as a precious gift for us to observe and follow. He is the example and role model we are supposed to seek in order to understand how to navigate this life correctly. Without Jesus, we go through life blindfolded, having to feel our way through with our own hands.

My hand made all these things, and so they all came into being. This is the Lord’s declaration. I will look favorably on this kind of person: one who is humble, submissive in spirit, and trembles at my word.

Isaiah 66:2, CSB

Jesus’ Hands Paid The Price

Creation is a magnificent use of God’s hands. But the most amazing use of God’s hands is found on that rugged cross. Jesus’ hands were nailed to the cross so ALL would see! The same hands that healed the blind and calmed the storms are the very same hands put on full display to show God’s love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and good news.

Oh, but we serve an even greater God than this! His love didn’t stop there; It went all the way to the grave where Jesus resurrects from the dead to reveal the very same holes in his hands from that historical day. What better use of His hands? God made a way for His children to find the light in a dark world that separates us from Him. I can’t think of anything better! The love God has for His children is always seen in His hands…

The same hands that calmed the storms are the very same hands put on full display to show God’s love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and good news. Oh, we serve a great God! His love went all the way to the grave for us. Click To Tweet

Lift Up Your Hands

God’s hands hold us when we are crying.

His hands mend our broken hearts and restore our souls.

God’s hands heal us and save us from Hell.

His hands mark the starting point to where our salvation is found.

Today believer, I implore you, to lift up those beautiful, hardworking, helpful, creative, useful hands of yours and worship in awe our Glorious God above! Let’s fold our hands in prayer and thank Him for the wounds His hands endured so we could have the gift of everlasting life with Him. This is the best gift we will ever receive… Hands down!!!

With Folded Hands, I Pray

Oh Lord Help Me to see that your hands are not my own. Help me to use my hands in a way that will glorify you and make your name be known. Teach me to follow Jesus in all my ways and seek to know Him more.

Thank you for the sacrifice your hands endured for me upon the cross. I am so undeserving of this free gift of salvation, but I receive it with a full and thankful heart.

Help guide me Lord to show love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness with my own two hands the way you did with yours. I lift up my hands today and surrender my life into your hands, God. In Jesus’ name, I pray.  Amen.

Work: Persevering Through Exhaustion to Serve God’s Kingdom

Day to day tasks and work can feel unfulfilling, causing exhaustion. We must persevere through negative attitudes to continue serving God’s Kingdom.

Don’t grow tired of doing good… I know it’s easier said than done. I know because I’m exhausted with it.

Day to day tasks and work can feel unfulfilling, causing exhaustion. We must persevere through negative attitudes to continue serving God's Kingdom. Women of Faith | Spiritual Growth | Scripture Study | Christian Mentoring | Daily Devotional #devotional #scripture #exhausted #perserverance #work

Exhausted

I’m exhausted from homeschooling my children so they will be trained in righteousness and the truth of God’s Word. I feel the weariness of changing diapers from my two youngest sons, and the foster children I had the years before them.

I’m so tired of giving my husband my full attention at the end of a long day. Not just physically -if that’s what you’re thinking- but the full attention he needs from me to listen to his stories. He loves to share his work with me and let me tell you, it wears me out to be fully attentive.

However, these are the good works I was made to do. The Lord knew he would be my husband, He called me to homeschool my children, and to be a foster/adoptive mother. When I’m singing songs and explaining history and wiping bottoms and making dinner, I’m doing it for Christ!

Enthusiasm

Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically. Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying. When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

Romans 12:11-13, NLT

I think sometimes we forget that our husbands and children are God’s people. We serve others outside our home with such enthusiasm and generosity but can have a begrudging attitude about the people we claim to love most in this world.

Our tendency to this, I believe, is because we don’t get any recognition for doing our work day in and day out. We do what we have to do because we have to do it. When others outside our homes need help, we do it because we love Christ, yes, but there’s also an element of feeling good about ourselves. Often, I tend to do better for near-strangers than my own household.

Sacrifice

I realized this ugliness in myself just a week ago. A neighbor, also a believer, needed help after a surgery. So, I went and cleaned her bathrooms with more detail and fervor than I’d given any task in my own home in months.

As I was cleaning, I felt very convicted. Why was I so willing to do her bathrooms when just wiping down my own countertops and mirrors made me feel like an unappreciated servant? I think the root issue in my life is laziness and pride. I want to do the things that make me happy and bring me joy and have forgotten that’s not what life is.

A life lived for others is full of sacrifice and self-denial. If I say I want to love God and serve others but only mean it when I’m enjoying myself, then I don’t have the right attitude.

Mundane Work

My family deserves my service to them with a heart full of joy. I am serving my King because I’m obeying His call on my life. He wants me where I am and I don’t want to serve Him begrudgingly. My life verse is a great motivator for me when I feel like I can’t find the point in the mundane and repetitive tasks in my life.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

James 1:12, NIV

Am I wrong for comparing my housework and vocation to a trial? Perhaps, but I’m only being honest about how it can feel.

I’ve been through many terrible and hard circumstances in my life, and I know that what I’m experiencing now is nothing like it. I need to have an attitude of gratitude and persevere in the work our loving Father has given me. I pray that my story will encourage some of you struggling in this area to persevere as well.
